When is paying for Fable 5 worth it?
A field test tells you more than the benchmarks. In a comparison run by Benjamin Preston, the three Claude models had to reconcile three months of booby-trapped expense reports: a hidden duplicate, a line in a foreign currency, an impossible date. The real issue with these tools isn't their cutting-edge intelligence, it's their operational reliability: availability, predictable cost, stable output format.
Two details make the case against Fable worse for everyday use. Its reasoning is always on and can't be switched off, so even a trivial task eats time and budget. And Fable draws from a separate weekly allowance on the plans, one you drain fast if you call it for small stuff.

Should you pay for a model that disappeared for 19 days?
Not by default, no. A flagship that has shown it can drop out of the catalog on a regulatory decision introduces a continuity risk that few tech leaders knowingly accept. Opus 5 has a more recent knowledge cutoff (May 2026 versus January 2026 for Fable) and a more stable offering. Fable's premium buys you occasional power, not peace of mind.
My verdict: pay for Opus 5, keep Fable for the exception
